Engineers have created a robot out of cocktail straws
The robot spider and swizzle sticks at first glance completely different things, so would be in the future, if not for the resourcefulness of scientists from Harvard, which is the basis of these unique items and created a robot. The resulting robot, similar to the front and could just as easily crawl on the water surface. Their development experts have called Arthrobot.
To create such fast and agile robot developers was prompted by observing insects. Spiders water striders are probably the most elegant and fastest of all spiders, who can run on water surface.
From the choice of material for its construction, the scientists made the unusual choice, they stopped at the cocktail straws. Scientists watched as the tube is bent, how many cycles it can withstand and it turned out that the tube is extremely durable creation, relative to its weight. The result is the most durable of soft robots, the robot.
Scientists decided to create something similar to the muscles, but the work they were supposed to work exactly the opposite. If the limb needs to unclench in place of her bend a little inflated plastic ball, and pushed the two parts of the bent nylon tube.
In the laboratory it was created several prototypes of such robots, each of the versions you can see in the video below.
